Attractions at Pearl Harbor: The USS Bowfin


TThe USS Bowfin, SS-287, is a Balao-class submarine and was a vessel of the United States Navy built during World War II. The Bowfin was completed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine of July 1942. It was commissioned and launched on the first anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombings on December 7th, 1942.

Attractions at Pearl Harbor: The Pacific Aviation Museum


The Pacific Aviation Museum located at Pearl Harbor on Ford Island was opened on the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on The United States in Hawaii, Dec 7th, 1941. The museum has galleries and exhibits set up to tell the story of military aviation in the Pacific Region during World War II.

The USS Arizona, named after the 48th state upon entering the union, was a battleship built and commissioned for the United States Navy in 1916. This ship was the last under the title of super-dreadnought battleship which carried heavier guns and thicker hulls.

Fuel continues to leak from the USS Arizona’s wreckage.


On December 6, 1941, the USS Arizona took on a full load of fuel—nearly 1.5 million gallons—in preparation for its planned voyage to the mainland later in December. The next day, much of it nourished the detonation and succeeding fires that demolished the ship following its attack by Japanese bombers.
